Interviews are a great opportunity for you to really sell yourself, however it is important to know what you must not say so you do not ruin your chances with any potential hiring manager.

  1. “What is it again that your company does?”- This shows that have not researched the company beforehand, and will annoy the hiring manager. Make sure you research fully the company’s history (key dates), locations and services that they provide.

  2. “I really disliked my previous boss and fellow employees”. – This is bad practise and will leave you looking unprofessional and rude. Do not mention any previous grievances that you may have had with your previous workplace.

  3. “I have no weaknesses”- remember no body if perfect and the hiring manager will know this. Use the opportunity to turn any short comings to show how you overcame them, this will prove that you have intuition and that you can acknowledge your weaknesses.

  4. “So what is my holiday entitlement?” As I will be needing time off- at this stage of the interview it is not time to discuss pre-booked holidays, if you get an offer then as part of the negotiation it can be discussed then .

  5. “I have nothing I wish to ask”-an interview is a two way conversation so make sure you have some pre planned questions to ask the interviewer to show your interest. By asking questions this will help to give you an insight as to whether the company in question is right for you.

  6. “I was fired from my last position”- While it is true that you must never lie in an interview, you must be careful to respond in a gracious way. Structure such as response like ‘my boss and I had differing views about the future direction of the company, and my position become no longer tenable, hence why am applying for this one’. Turn the negative into a positive
